The iPad Story
It all started back in March 2010 when Apple announced the very first iPad. Initially it was only available through Apples own outlets and sold over 300,000 on the first day alone. Within a few months over three million were sold and by the time it was discontinued over 15 million first generation iPads had been sold. Now discontinued.
The "iPad 2" was released in March 2011 and was 33% thinner, 15% lighter, had a faster A5 processor with rear and front cameras for FaceTime video calling.
The third generation was released in March 2012 and was officially called "The New iPad". This incorporated a new Retina Display which had a high pixel resolution of 2048 x 1536 which gave a super sharp bright image. A new faster A5X processor was also included. The cellular models were also capable of 4G speeds in certain countries only. Now discontinued.
The fourth generation was released in November 2012 and is officially known as "iPad with Retina Display". Again a new faster A6X processor was included with improved front camera and new Lightning cable connectivity.
The "iPad Mini" was also released in November 2012 and is a smaller version. The tablet screen measures 20.1cm with a thickness of 7.2mm and weighs 0.68lbs. Much of the specifications are similar to the iPad 2 with a dual core A5 processor and same resolution 1024 x 768 display.
These generations had the option of either 16GB, 32GB or 64GB memory configurations and were available in Black or White colours.
November 2013 saw the release of the fifth generation full sized tablet named "iPad Air" together with the second generation "iPad Mini with Retina Display". The iPad Air is thinner and lighter whilst the iPad Mini now sports a Retina Display. An additional 128GB memory option was also added to the range.
